Big Tip # 9 – Reduce Kids Extra Activities

On the one hand we seem to be spending more and more time ferrying our kids around the place form organised activity to organised activity and on the other hand we seem to be increasingly concerned about our ability to raise happy, healthy well adjusted children that won’t be susceptible to dugs and other forms of substance abuse. At some point we’ve got to ask ourselves if all this extra effort is actually doing any good. Personally I’m a big believer in the importance of kids having spare time and being able to play with other kids in that spare time. Far too much of our children’s time is now spent playing organised sport with adult intervention. Once upon a time kids would gather in the street, organise themselves into teams, organise a game, compete aggressively, win or loose, make up and move on. Now days most teams are brought together under adult supervision and played under the watchful eyes of the adults who set all the rules. So much of the learning experience for children is lost in the process. The ability to establish resonable rules, to handle conflict, to forgive and forget, to deal with criticism, to deal with success and failure, to impart justice. The list goes on and on. Organised sport offers few of these benefits plus it has the added burden of soaking up so much of your valuable time in ferrying the kids around and standing on the sidelines. While I’m all for spending time with the kids we also have a responsibility to equip them with the skills necessary to succeed in life. Increasingly we are seeing that success in latter life is not about sheer intelligence of junior accolades but rather the degree to which children have or have not mastered “emotional intelligence”. That is the ability to recognise and then control there own emotions, the ability to show empathy to others and the ability to regulate their own emotions so they become an ally rather than a destructive influence in their lives. Letting kids play together and learning to sought out their own differences contributes greatly to this process. I’m not suggesting kids should not play competitive sport, on the contrary I think this is a very important part of growing up. Therefore I am highly supportive of the weekly “match” whether that be netball, football or gymnastics. What I am suggesting however is that you cut out much of the evening activities. Let the kids instead amuse themselves with the time you free up for them and let you get on with some of the things that are important to you with the time you free up for yourself in the process.

Here's What Our Customers Say About Us...

"Dear Melanie, just a quick note to let you know how impressed I have been on the several occassion's that Andrei Dobrovolsky from United Home Services Carpet Cleaning has cleaned my carpets. On two occassions it was at quite short notice and he never failed with his manner and promptness. Especially on the last occassion he was here, and I was so very upset with the sudden loss of our puppy dog. Just the right empathy along with the clean rugs! Hope his business continues to thrive. Kind Regards"
- Mrs Rosmerritt, Surrey Hills, Victoria

"Bernie McEvey from United Home Services Cleaning Ivanhoe has been cleaning for us for a number of years now. We've always found him to be prompt, efficient and unfailingly cheerful in all aspects of his work. The house is always better off for his attentions! Bernie's documentation (invoicing, schedules) is clear and detailed. We've been so impressed by Bernie's work that we've recommended him to friends in the neighbourhood. They are now satisfied customers as well."
- M Pryor, Alphington

""We are very happy with the work that Bernie from United Home Services Cleaning Ivanhoe does in cleaning our house. He is thorough, reliable and comprehensive in all that he does. His communication with us is first class as is his dependability. His pleasant disposition means that we are always comfortable with him being in our home. His undoubted honesty gives us the confidence to allow him to move amongst our personal belongings in the knowledge that both they and our house are secure. His interaction with and tolerance towards our dog is an added little bonus that we appreciate very much.""
