I find a great way to keep the clutter down in the first place is getting into the habit of throwing something out each time I buy something new. Let’s face it, most of the things we buy are not totally unique but rather a newer, fresher, more contemporary version of something we already have. Try getting into the habit therefore of ensuring that you discard the item you are replacing rather that just pushing it aside. Like me I’m sure you will find many reasons at first why you should not do that i.e. the old one is still perfectly fine, there’s nothing wrong with the old one, the old one has served me well all these year etc.. etc.. If this is the case, and the old one is still too good to discard then you’ve got to ask yourself the question: why buy the new one? In most cases the decision is simple: If the old one still does the job and is too good to throw away then take the new item you just brought back to the shop and get a refund, it sounds like there might be better things to spend your money on. On the other hand if the new item is truly necessary because the old item is now too old, passed its usefulness etc.. etc… then you should have no hesitation in getting rid of the old. I know and appreciate this can be harder than it sounds but it does make sense. By following this simple logic you will cut down dramatically on the amount of clutter in your home and in the process save yourself some money as you take back some of the items that you realise in hindsight you probably didn’t really need.
