Big Tip # 6 – Say No to Things


 
It is very easy to fill your life up with lots of unnecessary activities and commitments. In many ways it gives us a sense of belonging and makes us feel needed if we are rushing round madly from one activity to the next. The flip side of this coin however is that it stops us from undertaking those activities in life that will ultimately leave us feeling truly satisfied. We enter a process of ever diminishing returns whereby our desire to achieve something of meaning or purpose compels us to take on more activities and responsibility which leaves us with less time to do what’s truly important which makes us feel less satisfied which drives us to take on more activities etc.. etc… etc… To break this cycle and get off the treadmill you have to redefine what’s important in your life and say no to things that do not achieve that objective. While a desire to help others is a noble notion I am always reminded of the aeroplane safety demonstration where they stress the need to put your oxygen mask on first before you attempt to help others, including your children! It’s the same in life. Unless you put your own life in order your capacity to help others will always be limited. Once you have your own life sorted out then by all means seek to help others. While the list of what’s important in life will be different for each of us it will generally look something like this:

1. Loving Relations.
2. Healthy Mind, Body & Soul.
3. Financial Independence.
4. Love what I do, continue to learn & achieve my full potential.

So learn to say “no” to those activities and invitations that do not help you get closer to achieving the above. While difficult at first, especially if it means pulling out of current activities and commitments that don’t pass the test, this approach will free up a great deal of valuable time to do the things that really do matter.
