One of the best ways I know to keep the house tidy is to enlist the help of your children. I know this is not possible until they’re old enough to hold a broom but you would be surprised how many of us dismiss this concept on the basis that the kids are too young and then forget to follow up when they do reach that golden age. That golden age by the way isn’t as old as you might think. Three and four year olds are quite capable of helping around the house. Our 4 year old is able to pack up his toys, put out the rubbish and unstack the dishwasher (bottom rack and glasses aside). For many of you this may seem like more trouble than its worth but keep in mind that it has desirable side benefits and from this perspective alone its well worth the trouble let alone the extra time it can help free up each day. Children benefit greatly from making a significant and tangible contribution to the household. It provides them with a sense of purposefulness and belonging and helps to build self esteem while teaching them both discipline and responsibility. You, on the other hand benefit from not having to do it all yourself. Some examples of tasks might be: Packing up their own toys, emptying the dishwasher, making their own bed, putting their dirty laundry in the washing basket, clearing the table at the end of a meal, feeding the pets, walking the dog, putting out the rubbish, mowing the lawns. Although at first it may seem like more trouble than its worth, persist and you shall reap the rewards both in freeing up valuable time and raising healthy well adjusted children.
